It certainly feels like his heart leaps into his throat in the same moment, and he simultaneously wants to pull Wolfwood in tighter and also wants to shove him off and then run away. If he steps back he'll just find the bark of the tree pressed against the middle of back again, so really there's not much room to run without shoving.
